Why Do Somalis Eat Banana's?

I have a quick question.

Why do Somali people eat Banana's with Rice and Pasta? Where did the idea come from? and why? I'm just curious, I've been asked this question before by my white friends, but I never gave them any straight answer because I didn't know WHY!

Even if you don't know why, just come up with ideas of why you think one would come up with an idea like that and perhaps we can make up a story to tell our none-Somalis friends.

Maybe they wanted to have all the categories of the food pyramid in one meal. The fruit seemed to be the only one missing.. so they added a banana with each dish.

This is a bit irrelevant but I found this article on google "Dividing Somalia into Banana Republics" while the content is serious but "banana republics" sounds funny at least on my part

Somalis are far from understanding the food pyramid, i must say few are adapting to it now with the help of doing awarness of health eating. However, Banana is one of the traditional fruits that we must have in our meals and it is good.
