Sincere Opinion on Poverty

Hello,

My name is Geraldine and I’m new in the forum. I’m a student in anthropology.

I’m very interesting in cultural diversity as well as spirituality. I would like to know if we could interact around the question of poverty. What do think about this serious problem? How do you define it? When you hear the word “Poverty” what comes up to your head?

The reason why I ask you this question is because I’m very touch by this topic and I would like to understand it better through your own vision. I truly think that each of us has a part of the whole truth. So that is the reason why your answer is very important for me. Also, I’m working in a humanitarian association as a volunteer member; therefore, my intrerest for understanding the problem is almost crucial for me.

How do you define it?
An individual can only define and describe poverty by outlining their way of life. I don’t think it’s as plain as picking up a dictionary and looking up the phrase, and entirely grasping the true import behind the term. If you would ask a 12 year old girl, who was raised by a millionaire what poverty means, she would have a different viewpoint than to a girl who was raised in a stiffened budgeted family. So my definition of poverty would arise from the edges of my own life, and how I was raised.

Poverty to me is people who are unfortunate to have the tools to live a successful and happy life.

What do think about this serious problem?
I think it’s a severe problem, but I also know that this problem is not fixable. Poverty will persist to be present as long as humans are breathing on this earth.

When you hear the word “Poverty” what comes up to your head?
When I hear poverty, I think of the waifs and strays children of the world, those who are abandoned; who have no shelter and no food.

What do I think, when I think of poverty? I think of back
home, my people who are tormented of hunger, and those without homes.


Sarai, I most certainly agree with what you’ve said above. I
don’t think I would have known what poverty really means, if wasn’t my escape
from the war back in the 90’s. It made
my eyes open, and really see the core of life. The irony of this problem is
that we can decrease poverty by contributing a little portion of our paychecks
to those in need, and poverty would have vanished from the world, its greed and
selfishness that puts poverty in every region of the world.
